What is Spray Seal?
Spray seal is one of the most widely used road surfacing treatments throughout Australia. By applying a sprayed bituminous binder followed by a layer of aggregate, spray sealing creates a durable, waterproof and skid-resistant surface suitable for a wide range of road and pavement applications.

Case study: Mill & Fill vs Mill, Seal & Fill
ANA is currently undertaking a pavement trial in Mayfield comparing traditional mill and fill treatments against a mill, seal and fill methodology.
The purpose of the trial is to better understand how alternative rehabilitation techniques may influence pavement performance, lifecycle costs and long-term asset management outcomes.
By continually investigating new approaches and technologies, ANA aims to provide clients with practical solutions that balance performance, durability and value for money.

Traditional Method Mill & Fill The existing asphalt surface is milled and replaced with new asphalt. Alternative Method Mill, Seal & Fill The existing asphalt surface is milled, followed by the application of a spray seal treatment before the new asphalt layer is installed. What Question Are We Trying To Answer? Can a spray seal layer incorporated into the rehabilitation process provide additional waterproofing, pavement protection and long-term performance benefits while delivering greater value for asset owners? Why Is This Important? Water is one of the leading causes of pavement deterioration. Once moisture enters a pavement structure, it can accelerate failures, reduce pavement life and increase maintenance costs. By introducing a spray seal treatment within the rehabilitation process, we aim to investigate whether additional protection can be provided to the underlying pavement structure while maintaining performance outcomes.
